New Delhi, February 17, 2025 — A 4.0-magnitude earthquake struck Delhi and its surrounding areas early Monday morning, sending tremors across the region and prompting people to rush out of their homes and buildings.

According to the National Centre for Seismology (NCS), the earthquake occurred at 5:36 AM at a shallow depth of 5 kilometers, with its epicenter near the Durgabai Deshmukh College of Special Education in Dhaula Kuan. This marks one of the most intense tremors in the region in recent times.

Scary Visuals of Tremors Surface Online

Videos circulating on social media platforms show people evacuating their residential complexes, while CCTV footage from Budh Vihar captures roads and parked vehicles shaking with significant intensity. Eyewitnesses described the moments as “terrifying” and “one of the scariest earthquakes they have ever experienced.”

Despite the panic, no reports of major damage or injuries have been confirmed so far. However, authorities have advised residents to remain cautious.

Government and Authorities Respond

Delhi Police reassured the public by posting on X (formerly Twitter), stating, “We hope everyone stays safe. In case of any emergency, please dial 112.”

Prime Minister Narendra Modi also addressed the situation, urging citizens to stay calm and follow safety measures. “Tremors were felt in Delhi and nearby areas. Urging everyone to remain cautious and alert for possible aftershocks. Authorities are closely monitoring the situation,” he wrote on X.

Delhi’s Seismic Activity: A Growing Concern

Seismologists note that Dhaula Kuan and its surrounding areas have experienced minor quakes every two to three years, due to its geological conditions. Experts continue to emphasize the importance of earthquake preparedness in the densely populated capital region.

As of now, no aftershocks have been reported, but officials are keeping a close watch for further seismic activity. Residents are advised to follow safety protocols and stay updated through official channels.
