Swearing-in Ceremony to Take Place at Ramlila Maidan in Presence of PM Modi
New Delhi, February 20, 2025: In a historic political development, the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has named Rekha Gupta as the new Chief Minister of Delhi, marking the party’s return to power in the national capital after 27 years. Gupta, a first-time MLA from Shalimar Bagh, was elected as the leader of the BJP Legislature Party on Wednesday, following extensive discussions among party leaders.
Her appointment was officially announced during the BJP Legislature Party meeting, attended by senior leaders including Ravi Shankar Prasad and Om Prakash Dhankhar. The decision comes after the BJP secured a commanding 48-seat majority in the 70-member Delhi Assembly, successfully dislodging the opposition and reclaiming governance in the capital.
Gupta will be sworn in as Delhi’s fourth woman Chief Minister on Thursday at Ramlila Maidan, in the presence of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Union Home Minister Amit Shah, BJP President J.P. Nadda, and other senior party leaders.
A Political Journey Rooted in Grassroots Leadership
Rekha Gupta’s appointment is seen as a strategic decision by the BJP, leveraging her administrative experience, organizational capabilities, and grassroots connect. Her journey in politics began in the early 1990s, when she was actively involved in student politics at Delhi University.
Gupta joined the Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP) in 1992 while pursuing her studies at Daulat Ram College, Delhi University. In 1996-97, she was elected as the President of the Delhi University Students’ Union (DUSU), where she played a significant role in addressing student welfare issues.
Her political career gained momentum when she entered municipal governance. In 2007, she was elected as a municipal councillor from North Pitampura and was re-elected in 2012. During her tenure, she worked extensively to improve civic amenities, including upgrading public parks, libraries, sanitation facilities, and sports infrastructure.
In recognition of her leadership skills, she was later appointed as the Mayor of the South Delhi Municipal Corporation (SDMC), where she focused on urban development, women’s welfare, and child development programs.
Championing Social and Women’s Welfare
Gupta has been a strong advocate for women’s empowerment and social welfare initiatives. She spearheaded several key programs, including the “Sumedha Yojana”, which provides financial assistance to economically weaker female students pursuing higher education.
As head of the Women Welfare and Child Development Committee, she introduced multiple skill development and self-employment initiatives for women, ensuring their greater participation in the workforce. Her policies have focused on education, healthcare, and social security for marginalized communities, positioning her as a leader committed to inclusive governance.
BJP’s Strategy and Political Implications
The BJP’s decision to appoint Rekha Gupta as Delhi’s Chief Minister is being viewed as a strategic move aimed at strengthening the party’s urban governance model. By choosing a leader with both administrative and grassroots experience, the party seeks to reinforce its agenda of development, governance efficiency, and social empowerment.
Her appointment is also expected to bolster BJP’s outreach to women voters and middle-class urban constituencies, key demographics in Delhi’s political landscape. With a focus on infrastructure, governance reforms, and public service delivery, Gupta is set to lead the BJP’s vision for Delhi’s transformation.
Electoral Victory and Road Ahead
Gupta’s rise to the Chief Ministership follows her resounding victory from the Shalimar Bagh (North-West) constituency, where she secured 68,200 votes in the 2025 Delhi Assembly elections. Her leadership will be closely watched as she takes charge of the city’s governance, addressing key challenges such as urban infrastructure, pollution control, public transportation, and civic amenities.
With the BJP now in power after nearly three decades, her administration is expected to introduce major policy reforms, economic initiatives, and governance improvements to fulfill the party’s electoral promises.
Swearing-In Ceremony at Ramlila Maidan
The oath-taking ceremony at Ramlila Maidan is set to be a grand affair, symbolizing the BJP’s renewed leadership in Delhi. The event will see the presence of key national and state BJP leaders, marking a significant moment in the city’s political history.
As she assumes office, Rekha Gupta is expected to unveil her governance roadmap for Delhi, outlining her administration’s priorities in infrastructure, social welfare, and economic development. With expectations running high, her tenure will be crucial in shaping the future of Delhi’s governance under the BJP.
