Stampede-Like Chaos at New Delhi Railway Station Amid Kumbh Rush; 15 Injured
New Delhi, February 16: A stampede-like situation was reported at New Delhi Railway Station on Saturday evening as a massive crowd of devotees thronged the station to travel to Prayagraj for the Mahakumbh. At least 15 people were injured, with several passengers rescued in an unconscious state.
According to preliminary reports, the chaos unfolded on platforms 14 and 15, primarily due to a surge of passengers, many of whom did not have confirmed train tickets. The unexpected rush led to overcrowding, causing panic and suffocation-like conditions among commuters.

Indian Railways officials, along with Delhi Police personnel, swiftly responded to the situation. Emergency medical assistance was provided, and the injured were rushed to nearby hospitals for treatment. The Ministry of Railways has assured that the situation is now under control.
Sources indicate that Union Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw is expected to visit New Delhi Railway Station shortly to assess the situation and visit the injured. Other senior railway officials have also arrived at the scene to take stock of the situation.
It is important to note that two special Kumbh trains had been arranged to accommodate the high passenger demand. However, the sudden and overwhelming influx of devotees caused severe congestion at the station. Authorities are currently investigating how so many passengers arrived without valid tickets.
Despite initial reports suggesting a stampede, railway officials have clarified that no such incident occurred. Instead, the sheer volume of people led to suffocation and distress among passengers. The incident took place around 8:00 PM, and several affected individuals have been transported via the special trains for medical attention.
As of now, Railway Police and Delhi Police remain on-site to manage the crowd and ensure the smooth operation of train services. Further investigations are underway to prevent such incidents in the future.
