Washington/New Delhi: Prime Minister Narendra Modi departed for the United States on Wednesday evening after wrapping up his visit to France, where he co-chaired the Paris AI Action Summit alongside French President Emmanuel Macron and engaged in bilateral discussions, news agency PTI reported.

During his visit to the US, PM Modi is scheduled to hold bilateral talks with President Donald Trump on February 13, making him only the third foreign leader to be hosted at the White House since President Trump’s second term began on January 20. The meeting underscores the deepening strategic partnership between India and the US, building upon the strong rapport between the two leaders established during Trump’s first tenure.

Trade & Tariffs

President Trump, in his second term, is reassessing US trade policies, imposing new tariffs across multiple sectors. Recently, he announced a 25% tariff on goods from Mexico and Canada, though temporarily paused after high-level negotiations. However, a 10% tariff on Chinese imports has escalated fears of a broader trade war. While Trump has previously labeled India as a “tariff king” and criticized its trade policies, New Delhi remains keen on fostering balanced trade relations.

Immigration & Deportation

Just ahead of PM Modi’s visit, the Trump administration deported a first batch of 104 Indian illegal immigrants, reportedly chained and transported on a military aircraft. According to sources, an additional 800 individuals—comprising 487 Indian citizens and 298 others under final verification—are also set for deportation. The Indian government has raised concerns over the treatment of Indian nationals but continues to engage diplomatically to address the issue.
